Whether you are in National Honor Society and need to turn-in required volunteer hours to Mr. Wilson, or want to spend your time doing something positive, there are endless benefits to volunteer work. I have learned the importance of volunteering and I think other students need to know as well. Over the summer I went to Puerto Rico for one week with my church, and did missionary work. The experience changed my life. I met new people from around the country, which created new friendships and memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. I painted two houses, interior and exterior, which increased my understanding for hard work. Also, when it was time to leave, the families I helped were so appreciative and didn’t want my church to leave. It was such a great moment because I felt important and I felt like all of my hard work paid off. I also learned that I don’t have to go out of the country to make a difference. I could have the same satisfaction of helping others by doing local volunteer work, right here in Delaware. For example, bringing-in canned goods for the school’s food drive, visiting a nursing home, collecting soda tabs to assist cancer-patient’s medical finances, etc. Starting in October, I will volunteer my Monday afternoons at an ASPCA in Ocean View, where I will give some much need love and attention to deserving dogs and cats in search of a forever home.
