Ms. Roach Interview Ms. Roach, who was a former Indian River student, has returned to our great school to help educate the next generation in Spanish. She took some of her busy time to answer these questions: Q: Where did you go to college and what would you suggest to students pursuing a degree in education?A: I went to the University of San Diego. I would suggest trying to observe a many teachers in as many disciplines as possible to see the different techniques that are used for classroom management and teaching style. Q: What was it about Spanish that made you want to teach it over all other languages? A: I felt that Spanish was a useful language to know in the US because of the large Spanish-speaking population here. Going to school in San Diego I had a lot of friends who were native speakers and I wanted to be able to speak to them in their first language. Q: How long have you been teaching Spanish?A: This is my second year teaching Spanish. I taught my first year at Sussex Central. Q: What do you like best about the Hispanic culture? A: I enjoy how friendly and welcoming the culture is. There is a certain appreciation for having a good time that is present in the Hispanic culture as apposed to others. It is definitely not dull. Q: Why did you decide to come back and teach at the school where you graduated?A: When I graduated from college I moved back home to be closer to my family and friends. When the opportunity arose to teach at the same high school I graduated from, I jumped on it because I had a very positive high school experience. The teachers were friendly, smart and always willing to help and the administrators were always supportive. It seemed like an environment I’d like to work in. Q: How is IR different from when you were in school? A: The student body is very similar maybe a little larger though. The students are still smart motivated and athletic and all around great people to be with all day. A lot of the staff is till very similar to what it was when I went to school here. Mr. Steele was my principle too. Q: What year did you graduate from IR? A: I graduated in 2002. Q: What are your future goals for your students? A: I would like for my students to enjoy learning a second language not only to be able to converse with others but also so they become more understanding and appreciative of other cultures. I want my students to enjoy speaking a second language as much as I do. Contributed by Flora Utrera
